Wormald connects with the community for Reconciliation and NAIDOC weeks
Wormald keeps a close connection with our local communities, and we are proud to once again support National Reconciliation Week (NRW), from 27 May to June 3, and NAIDOC Week this July as we celebrate and share the history, culture, and achievements of Australia’s First Nations peoples. To commemorate NRW and NAIDOC Weeks, Wormald will be hosting numerous internal events for our staff and customers.
First Nations children’s colouring competition
NRW 2023 is centred around the theme “Be a Voice for Generations.” This year, Wormald wants to help young Australians Be a Voice for Generations and is hosting a colouring competition for children aged from one to 10, and from 11 to 17.
Children aged from one to 10 will complete the design of a campfire with hunters sitting together and kangaroo tracks around the outside, while children in the older age group will complete an artwork featuring a dreaming turtle. The colouring competition has been created, and artworks designed, by one of Wormald’s Indigenous team members. One winner from each age group will receive a 10.9-inch iPad Air, and each entrant will receive a book from the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF).
Indigenous Literacy Foundation fundraiser
ILF is a not-for-profit (NFP) organisation which respects the unique place of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and helps to support communities and families by ensuring access to quality resources, including books in First Languages, and publishing First Nations stories through its Book Supply, Book Buzz, and Community Publishing Projects programs. ILF is also committed to ensuring leadership, ownership, and authenticity is held with First Nations Elders and residents.
ILF recognises that literacy provides a fundamental step in building context, comprehension, and understanding, whether it is written, visual, or auditory, and that there can be a lifelong impact for children who miss that foundational step in their literacy journey. Remote communities across Australia often lack infrastructure, such as libraries or bookstores, and access to reading material is extremely limited which can significantly impact the achievements of First Nations children.
Wormald is also proud to host morning teas, afternoons teas, and lunches for our staff and customers across each of our branches nationally for both NRW and NAIDOC weeks, which will help to raise much-needed funds for ILF.
