FireWire 16: Heavy Vehicle Fire Protection - Assessing your risk

All fire protection solutions in Australia are based on the level of perceived risk. What is the likelihood of a fire event occurring and what is the expected consequence as a result of the fire?

Australian building codes and Australian Standards dealing with fire protection offer the most appropriate fire solutions based on risk analysis and management in the form of prescriptive fire solutions presented as mandatory clauses for scope and technical requirements.

Australian Standard, AS 5062- 2006: Fire Protection for Mobile and Transportable Equipment is the preeminent Standard for fire protection of heavy vehicles and the like. It promotes rigorous processes for risk analysis and assessment as a prerequisite to the design and installation of fire protection systems. It is the first fire protection Standard to base fire protection on a risk analysis model, rather than a fixed prescriptive model.

Wormald has embraced the AS 5062 Risk Assessment and Reporting Process

Complying with AS 5062, requires the determination of the likely risk exposure to a fire and selecting the most appropriate solution for each heavy vehicle application. Our strict quality processes include:

  • Formalised Wormald Vehicle Fire Suppression (VFS) System Risk Assessment and Reporting to ensure that all critical considerations have been assessed. It results in a formal technical assessment for each vehicle application that is ‘peerreviewed’ by an accredited, experienced Wormald VFS System Technician. The reports include:

    - Fire hazard identification
    - Fire risk analysis
    - Fire risk treatment/reduction
    - Recommendation for the most appropriate fire solution

  • Wormald VFS System Risk Assessment Accreditation process to ensure that only experienced and formally accredited Wormald VFS Systems Technicians perform the risk assessment and ‘peer-review’.
  • Wormald VFS Systems Training structure provides the necessary technical knowledge, on the job experience and mentoring in Wormald’s VFS Systems.
  • Wormald’s Technical Electronic Library has been developed by the Technical Services Group and contains the latest technical information to support the Wormald VFS Systems including Australian Standards, system manuals, testing & listing approvals, procedures and much more for all our VFS Systems staff to access.
