article1-lg

As we reported in a previous FireWire, Wormald was selectedto install the fire protection systems on the Sino MiningProject. Operated by Citic Pacific Mining, the Sino miningand processing operation is one of the most significant in thePilbara region of Western Australia. The massive project isbeing developed at Cape Preston, 100 kilometres south westof Karratha.

The Sino Iron project is the largest magnetite and processing operation under constructionin Australia. It is focused on delivering a world class magnetite iron ore developmentwhich will add value to the Western Australian economy through significant downstreamprocessing, employment, community benefits and international technology transfer, while at the same time balancing social and environmental considerations.

Wormald is proud to be involved in the project as the site’s chosen fire protectionpartner. The installation works commenced on Process Line 1 in May 2011 and is duefor completion later this year. This is the first of six process lines on the project. Thecontracted fire installation works are due to finish by the end of 2012.

Wormald was selected to work on the project because of our ability to provide acomplete turn-key solution. Our end-to-end capabilities mean that our dedicated teamis able to guide Sino through the entire process from initial sales, to design and projectmanagement, right through to completion and commissioning.

The fire protection and detection systems at the Sino Mine comprises a sprinkler systemwith complete fire water supply, consisting of pumps, tanks, sprinkler and deluge systems. In addition a Simplex ® 4120 fire system network will be made up of around 40 VESDAdetection systems and thermal detection in some of the smaller areas. The network alsointerfaces with 20 third party detection systems and spans both the iron ore processingplant and Port Area facility, including the Desalination Plant, which are approximately 30kilometres apart and connected via fibre optic cable.

Once the project is completed, it is expected that our local fire service teams will continueto service and maintain the system for the life of the mine.
